Nov 20 show notes
Fresh from our trip to NYC to schmooze with the folks at Network2.tv, the Best Damn Tech crew fired up the geek news that matters…sort of.
Jason Calacanis (or cockass…Drew can’t pronounce his name) departs from AOL. He cites the departure of CEO Jon Miller.
Remember when we used to ask the Lycos dog to “Go Get It!”, unfortunately it wouldn’t and so we went to Google. Well, they’re back and rebranding themselves as a new Web portal. While their search is powered by Ask, apparently one of their most exciting features is the Lycos Cinema. While their angle is interesting (folks can watch a movie together online and chat about it live), the execution is a little disconcerting, limiting users to viewing on a PC, using IE6+, Windows Media Player 10, Flash and a pretty limited selection of movies. Woof!
AIM hasn’t had a full make over since 2002 but they’ve now released some exciting new features that will make users happy (after having to wade through advertisements.) This release follows their API release, and after acquiring Userplane a couple of months ago. A couple of new features here: mobile phone integration, interface updates, video, audio and image sharing, create your own avatars or WeeMees and the ability to allow 1000 buddy’s on your list. As if you have 1000 buddies.
Google, Yahoo and MSN collaborate for a standard sitemap protocol at www.sitemaps.org. “Whack one on!”
Google also adds Skype to its Google Pack.
Big collaboration by the folks at Hutchinson, bringing in some big names to the mobile market including Skype, Slingbox, Orb, Nokia and others together.
Iris on the Virus
Vista hacked already.
MS Reboot Wednesday
SANS Top-20 Internet Security Attack Targets (2006 Annual Update)
Geek Psychic
GP fuels rumors of an impending iPhone release.
Tech Biffo
Game Console wars are heating up in time for Chrissy. The main contenders here are Wii v Playstation.
Wii has unconventional features (motion sensitive remote), price point (half the price of Playstation and XBox) cheaper games. Our immediate thoughts, Wii will appeal to the masses, but serious gamers will be sticking to their higher end games.
MySpace pulls the url from an unsigned band called “bones” to make available to FOX TV show “Bones”. They then gave them the memorable url myspace.com/7483383. Possibly due to public pressure and fearing more backlash they gave it back.
Happy turkey day for those in the US, happy Thursday for those elsewhere.
