Best Damn News
Following their failed bid on Yahoo, Microsoft is giving Facebook a bit of a poke to see if they’ll poke back over the possibility of a full acquisition. While they already claim $240 million investment in the company, values are being thrown around in the ballpark of $15 billion.

As anticipated, Grand Theft Auto smashed all sorts of sales records, raking in some $500 million in its first week. The Hooker and Prostitutes Union (HPU) have now changed their tune, now staking a claim in the success of the game. “Even though the game depicts violence against us, it’s all true and now it gives us an extra element of credibility” says Lindy LaLa the union’s spokeperson. Now a new group has come out against the game, RAD (Russians Against Defamation) are complaining that “in the game Russians are depicted in a bad way” they go on to say that “not all Russians are that ugly” citing Baryshnikov, Kournikova and Sharapova as examples. Plus, only 70% of Russians regularly wear sweat suits. (Side note, most copies sold on XBOX)

Pownce says game on with shared files in friend streams, and more storage space for everyone. Competitor to box.net, ups the game on twitter.

Microsoft trying to buy Facebook now that they’ve dumped Yahoo at the arranged marriage alter?
Do they really want FACEBOOK or do they want Mark Zuckerburg (or both?). Zuckerburg the next Bill Gates? Long term CEO? Ballmer/Gates’ Successor?

The debate on Net Neutrality rages on. Also raging on…

Senators to ISP’s: “Think twice” about ‘Net neutrality or else.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080506-senator-to-isps-think-twice-about-net-neutrality-or-else.html

Years ago, Congress began protecting ISPs from the twin threats of regulation and taxation; in return, ISPs were expected to deliver an unimpeded connection to the Internet. A move away from a neutral ‘Net would undermine the “very philosophical underpinnings of what we fought for for the last 15 years,” according to Ron Wyden (D-OR). If that happens, he sees no reason for Congress to continue sheltering ISPs.

More proof that hackers are generally assholes….the website for the epilepsy foundation was recently hacked with the intent on causing seizures. They exploited a vulnerability in the publishing software that would barrage the users with a lot of flashing images and bright colors.

The MPAA has won a victory against TorrentSpy, claiming a $110 million judgement and permanent injunction for distribution of pirated video. As a result TorrentSpy has shut up shop.

The truth about Flemo

As many of you know there is a behind the scenes biffo between myself (Adam) and Flemo. At some point he decided to emasculate me be adding the word ‘Dutchess’ to my name during introductions on the show. My first reaction to this was simply not to react. I figured this little bee would get no honey from this particular jab and fly away. Time and the ‘joke’ wore on and unfortunately the neither wore out. I considered retaliation, but as I plotted, I realized I couldn’t engineer a worthy rebuttal without more information. I needed to know why he would attempt to emasculate me in the first place. Shrouded in this sweater of enigma, the truth behind Paul’s actions would would leave no weak spot unprotected. Find a single thread, and I could unravel the sweater leaving behind only the naked truth.

The first step, however, involved having to disassociate myself from the scenario. Stepping out of the ‘victim’ role, I was able to consider that perhaps, I wasn’t the cause at all. Perhaps I was mere collateral damage; an unfortunate casualty in a war I was unaware of. Perhaps the answers lie in Flemo’s mysterious past.

The first step in uncovering his past was to observe the present. What I do know is that Flemo loves music. He loves karaoke and he loves dancing at parties. Other leads turned up nothing, but looking into his past with music left one clue. The only lead was some sort of dealing with a man called Tendlar. Tendlar, it turns out was a Hollywood agent, and was related to a Dave Tendlar who worked with Famous Studios in 1947. Famous Studios produced many of the Chiquita Banana cartoons and Tendlar still had connections there. Following that lead, I learned that in 1956 Famous Studios had become Paramount Cartoon Studios. It was there, deep in the Paramount Pictures vaults that I discovered this video. It was in fact a failed audition to be the Chaquita Banana woman.

Paul’s actions are not meant to emasculate me as much as they are merely projection. A simple pointing of the finger to draw attention away from an unfortunate past encounter with a once provocative dance.

That’s why I’ve decided I can’t retaliate. To do so would only help plunge him deeper into denial of the things he loves. Instead, I shall encourage him to follow his dream, or at least be proud that he once did. Should you see him, be sure to tell him he’s was once and may well still be a good dancer.

Best Damn Tech Show Period – Matt Mullenweg – April 14th 2008

Matt (of WordPress) Drops by the studio and we discuss Microsoft, Open Source, Yahoo, and the future.

Welcome back Demonoid!

After months of being put on hold, one of our favorite bit-torrent sites has returned!

To my total amazement, I logged onto my family’s computer this evening forgetting that I had Demonoid as my home page. Oddly enough, I was planning on searching some torrents anyway and for a brief few seconds, I didn’t even notice I had been searching on Demonoid (rather that The Pirate Bay like I had planned). I’m pretty frigging stoked!

According to a post on Demonoid.com, Deimos, the former site administrator, was no longer able to put in the proper amount of time to take care of the site due to personal matters. He has recently assigned a good friend to take his place and the original moderating crew is still on board. Everything seems to be running smoothly, so for those of you with accounts, get back in there!
