Beware of the “US Copyright Registry” Scam

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I got an email today, very official looking and sounding.   It was about one of my domain names.  I have tons.   It said that if I don’t register with them they can’t be held liable if someone screws with my site or trademark.

I almost freaked out for a second.   It seemed real?   What did i do?  I googled it and found this:

http://domainnamewire.com/2008/03/12/domain-scam-us-copyright-registry/

If you ever get an email you’re not sure about, google a block of text from it, or the name of the company, or the email address it came from.   If its a scam, other people will write about it, like in this case.

So beware of this scam.   And never click a link, reply, call a #, enter information, or do anything other than check more into it on the web if you’re not sure!

Twas a bit of mixed day for Apple at the WWDC in Frisco.

Apple released Safari for Windows and announced that Safari will be running on the new iphone.

Google are coming under increasing pressure amid privacy concerns following a report by UK-based human rights agency Privacy International that gave them the big thumbs down coming last behind the likes of Yahoo, Apple and MySpace.

Yahoo investors had a bit of a cry at the recent shareholders meeting, many calling for Terry Semel’s head and questioning recent executive departures. We all know Plante loves his Yahoo!

Disney’s ESPN has purchased the largest cricket website cricinfo.com in an attempt to become more global.

China are allegedly blocking Flickr after photos of the Tiananmen massacre from 1989 were posted according to Yahoo!s Hong Kong office. They cannot confirm these details.

A leaked report found on the NYT has Google accusing Microsoft of making it difficult for 3rd party search engines to replace the default live search on Vista.

Continuing on their out of control collision course, ebay has apparently pulled Google’s advertising after a plan was leaked to crash the ebay user conference in Boston to promote Google Checkout with promises of free booze and women (actually made the woman part up because it sounds good). We wish to see an all out brawl between Meg Whitman and Eric Schmidt.

YouTube apparently ready to start testing a product that theroretically identifies copyright clips and blocks them which should please media companies.

7 sex offenders caught. Aside from liking sex offense, they all have a myspace profile.

Watching TV and movies online

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

OK so I think I may have almost convinced my wife that you can really watch TV on your computer. Her computer sucks, it’s no secret (it’s ACER people…cheap and nasty) but she keeps hearing me and others talk about using your computer to watch movies and tv shows (and not just DVD’s) online. I showed her YouTube…she wasn’t convinced…too much crap, people talking about themselves, only short clips etc. I showed her a few of the others, blip and revver and metacafe etc. ad infinitum. That’s right, there are a bunch of them. She still remained disillusioned. Again, just short clips and people talking about themselves (or annoying people more appropriately).

So I showed her PeekVid and something turned her. I don’t know if it was Gilmore Girls or Saved by the Bell that changed her mind but she was impressed. Then she saw that you could watch movies that hadn’t been released yet and it was all over, she’s a convert. It got me thinking though. PeekVid may do it for me and mine but what about you and yours….maybe there are others that will help convince them to explore this exciting medium further. Here’s my top 5.

1. PeekVid.com - As mentioned above, they have a decent resource of tv shows and movies for your viewing pleasure.
2. ChooseandWatch.com - cable tv stations available on your browser (can be a little sluggish at times tho) but has sucked a lot of my time. Recently updated their look. Also ChannelKing as a bonus is this realm.
3. Viewmy.tv - a slick interface separates this one out. The ability to sort by region and genre is a big plus.
4. TV-Video.net - if you missed an episode of one of your favorite shows like Prison Break or Heroes, here’s where you’ll find and be able to watch them.
5. Bleenks - offers a few unique shows that may not be available elsewhere. Can take a while to figure out how to find something.

wil wheaton makes his case for linux

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

http://www.hour25online.com/pix/wil-wheaton_03a.jpgWil Wheaton wants you to try linux. Seriously. Try it, he says.

based on the comments to yesterday’s post, there’s a lot of curiosityabout Linux, and until I have time to write the obligatory “Linux is acool alternative OS that does lots of great stuff and is so easy tomake go, a Pakled could do it” post, some of you may be interested intrying out a Live CD distribution, just to see if Linux could detect and support your hardware andperipherals without risking any modifications to your hard drive atall, you can run an entire Linux operating system, filled with allsorts of software (office stuff, Internets stuff, audio stuff, and afew games that, admittedly, aren’t much better than minesweeper) off aLive CD. I recommend Knoppix or Ubuntu.

Ladies and Gents, when Wil Wheaton says jump….you say how frickin’ high!!!!! Seriously, give it a shot.

Leila says “iPhone has drawbacks”

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

The much anticipated iphone was unveiled earlier this month at the MacWorld Expo in San Fransisco. Currently restricted to Cingular customers only, the iphone is proving to be extremely popular and has left a lot of people on other networks disappointed. But what is it about the the iphone that’s really got people counting down the days, hours and minutes to it’s release.

After revolutionising how we listen to music, Apple have taken it one step further and have created a phone of the future. The iPhone combines quad band mobile phone technology,  widescreen ipod with touch screen controls and a “breakthrough” internet communications device.

Measuring  115 x 61 x11.6mm, the phone is slim, sleek and bursting with technology! Connection is real easy with this phone. For me, Bluetooth is essential so I can send my pictures to my laptop easily and quickly. But it also comes with wi-fi and EDGE , so there are plenty of choices. The iPhone  also boasts a desktop class email allowing you to keep in touch on the move, web browser for quality mobile internet and you’ll never get lost with Google maps which is almost a must on most phones in today’s market. It really is the ideal phone for keeping in touch and staying connected.

If that wasn’t enough for you, the widescreen iPod might attract you. With touch screen controls and a choice of 4 or 8 gig of store, you can carry your entire music collection in your phone , in your pocket. I don’t know about any other girls out there, but it definitely saves on the handbag space! The iPhone is also compatible with iPod accessories such as car docking stations and speakers, which means no need to rush out and upgrade your current iPod accessories.

Other features include a 2 mega-pixel camera, a minimum requirement in my opinion. Phone photography has come along way in the past year or two and anything less would be a major disappointment. The Multi touch display with qwerty keyboard is an interesting choice – I can’t comment on the usability of this, but being the first of it’s kind, I’m sure it would take some getting used to. Touch screens seem to be the way of the future and I am sure other companies will follow suit. Time to start practising the tapping. The iPhone also comes with an optimized MAC OS X operating system, pdf viewer and widgets (mini applications).

Sounds great right?  Maybe… but as with all technology, it has it’s drawbacks. As I mentioned before, the iPhone is only available on the Cingular network and this will be the case for the next two years. Bad news for the games also, currently, the iPhone doesn’t come with any games. I would expect this to change fairly quickly though as the current iPods come with standard games. Are you one of those people who likes to catch embarrassing moments on video? Well you may have to wait for a while. The iPhone only takes still pictures at the moment. I don’t think it will be long before they upgrade the camera to include the video feature though, as most standard camera phones do. As there is no video, there is also no 3G technology at the moment either.  One frequently highlighted drawback is that the wi-fi and Bluetooth do not have syncing capabilities with calendars or email, which may prove to be a problem for the busy exec. For the moment, if you want to have your appointments on your iPhone and computer, it will be a case of entering the details twice over.

But overall, the iPhone seems to be a big hit. I am certainly looking forward to it’s release and I am sure sales will speak for themselves. Priced at about the $500 -$600 mark (depending on how much store you choose), they aren’t cheap, but you will certainly be the envy of all your friends.
