Welcome back Demonoid!

Friday, April 11th, 2008

After months of being put on hold, one of our favorite bit-torrent sites has returned!

To my total amazement, I logged onto my family’s computer this evening forgetting that I had Demonoid as my home page. Oddly enough, I was planning on searching some torrents anyway and for a brief few seconds, I didn’t even notice I had been searching on Demonoid (rather that The Pirate Bay like I had planned). I’m pretty frigging stoked!

According to a post on Demonoid.com, Deimos, the former site administrator, was no longer able to put in the proper amount of time to take care of the site due to personal matters. He has recently assigned a good friend to take his place and the original moderating crew is still on board. Everything seems to be running smoothly, so for those of you with accounts, get back in there!

Philly Beer Week 2008- March 7-16

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

As you may have noticed, us folks here at the tech show are huge fans of beer and we are happy to invite everyone to a celebration of Philadelphia’s amazing beer culture and tradition. Over the next ten days, Philly Beer Week will showcase many of the fine Philadelphia pubs and brewers.

“From Day One, when William Penn started work on his own brewery in 1682, Philadelphia has been a great beer-drinking city. Today, the local scene is better than any time in its history. Fresh craft beer… authentic taverns… diverse styles… exotic imports… Belgian-style cafes… and a sudsy tradition unlike any other in America.”

You can find a schedule of events here. We’ll do our best to make it out to as many of these as possible, so come on out and have a few with us.

Lindsay Lohan IS Tech News

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Why? Because I’m sure the shots were taken with a digital camera. Enjoy Lindsay Lohan recreating Marilyn Monroe’s famous last shoot for the New York Magazine. Yes, she is nude. No they’re not photoshopped. (NSFW, unless you’re cool like some of us and work for themselves)

Best Damn Reddit - Submit Your News!

Friday, January 25th, 2008

So, we’ve always asked you to submit news via email.   That’s SO web 1.0.

Forget that noise, we got our hands on a sweet invite only feature on Reddit.com (which some say is way better than Digg..we shall see).

So now, you can submit and vote on news here:

http://reddit.com/r/bestdamntech/

We’ll incorporate it into the show in the coming weeks.   I’m pumped.

Valleywag Vlog Hot voting.

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Vlog HotThe folks over at Valleywag have opened the polls for their Vlog Hot competition, a.k.a geek eye candy, for all to vote on.

I didn’t know about nominations otherwise I’m sure our very own Dr. Drew and The Very Reverend Sir Adam Plante would most certainly be on the list (modesty prevents me from suggesting that I would be on the list as well). However, the good news is that our very own Shauna made the list and she’s up against Congers (Amanda Congdon) who is without doubt, shamelessly voting for herself.

Shauna Head over and notch one up for the good guys (that’s Shauna, do I have to explain myself every time…oh it’s probably the accent).
…..flemo

UPDATE!!! OK, so I should’ve known the good Doc (Drew that is) got his mug up there in the voting circles. Not the most flattering photo but sure to appeal to the goth set. Is that permanent Drewby? Might as well notch one up for him as well.

Chris Brogan Says "Back up your Gmail!”

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Thanks to our homie Chris Brogan for this great advice and heads up.

Handsome Om Malik has officially scared the bejeesus
out of me with his post about Gmail suffering some kind of problem
resulting in deleted accounts, missing archives, etc. Story link is here.

Back Up Your Gmail

I took Om’s advice and backed my gmail account up. Here’s the steps I took.

  1. Read Google’s Help document on POP access to your Gmail account.
  2. Configure an account on your mail client for your gmail
account. - IMPORTANT- Build a separate account. If you’re using
Outlook, make sure this is a standalone PST file. If you’re using
mail.app or Thunderbird, make sure this is a standalone account.
  3. Do the sync between gmail and your client. NOTE: This will probably take a while.
If you’ve got a fairly healthy gmail account with lots of archived
mail, you will be at this step for hours. So, disable your computer’s
sleep setting, but enable the screensaver if you want, and let it do
    its thing.
  4. When it’s all there, turn off your mail client.
  5. Locate your mail client’s file for the gmail mails.
  6. Consider moving these (or making a copy) offline to a backup
drive. In my case, I’m going to clip off a current update from today,
and toss that entire file to my backup drive. Then, I’ll delete the
account on my POP mail client, and go about my business.
  7. Schedule your updates periodically with Google Calendar (provided THAT doesn’t encounter a whoops).

I am a *huge* supporter of web-side applications. I use Google mail,
calendar, docs, maps, and search every day. But an experience like what
Om points out at GigaOm is a great reminder that it’s still my job to
make appropriate backups of my records and not trust Google (or any
other company) to keep my data safe for me.

If you’re a gmail user, consider doing this within the next 24 hours
(provided you haven’t been doing this all along). External hard drives
are cheap (I just got a 200GB external drive for $99). Give your online
data a life vest.

An introduction…

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

As the newest member of the BDTSP, I thought it only right to tell you a little bit about myself and what I am hoping to achieve as the new Community Manager.

I’m 24 and I live and work in London, England. I came across the BDTSP on the Opera Community this year and after watching a couple of episodes I was hooked! I got in touch with the guys to tell them what I thought of the show and kept in touch ever since. So when they advertised the Community Manager position, I immediately offered to help out. So here I am!!!

My Aim

As well as ensuring that all emails and messages are replied to, it is my aim to bring a bigger audience to the BDTSP and to build a community that will interact with eachother and become more involved by giving us feedback in order to improve our show and give you all a more enjoyable viewing experience.I’m also hoping to incorporate the other shows such as Scriggity, into my plan, once I have found my feet with the BDTSP (which shouldn’t be too long!).

Any suggestions, please email me:- leila@bestdamntech.com
