Beware of the “US Copyright Registry” Scam

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I got an email today, very official looking and sounding.   It was about one of my domain names.  I have tons.   It said that if I don’t register with them they can’t be held liable if someone screws with my site or trademark.

I almost freaked out for a second.   It seemed real?   What did i do?  I googled it and found this:

http://domainnamewire.com/2008/03/12/domain-scam-us-copyright-registry/

If you ever get an email you’re not sure about, google a block of text from it, or the name of the company, or the email address it came from.   If its a scam, other people will write about it, like in this case.

So beware of this scam.   And never click a link, reply, call a #, enter information, or do anything other than check more into it on the web if you’re not sure!

Philly Beer Week 2008- March 7-16

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

As you may have noticed, us folks here at the tech show are huge fans of beer and we are happy to invite everyone to a celebration of Philadelphia’s amazing beer culture and tradition. Over the next ten days, Philly Beer Week will showcase many of the fine Philadelphia pubs and brewers.

“From Day One, when William Penn started work on his own brewery in 1682, Philadelphia has been a great beer-drinking city. Today, the local scene is better than any time in its history. Fresh craft beer… authentic taverns… diverse styles… exotic imports… Belgian-style cafes… and a sudsy tradition unlike any other in America.”

You can find a schedule of events here. We’ll do our best to make it out to as many of these as possible, so come on out and have a few with us.

Lindsay Lohan IS Tech News

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Why? Because I’m sure the shots were taken with a digital camera. Enjoy Lindsay Lohan recreating Marilyn Monroe’s famous last shoot for the New York Magazine. Yes, she is nude. No they’re not photoshopped. (NSFW, unless you’re cool like some of us and work for themselves)

Congrats to Goowy

Monday, February 4th, 2008

One of our favorite companies, for their service, and their awesome people…Goowy, just got purchased by AOL.

While AOL hasn’t been our favorite company in the past, they are now focusing on a big money maker on the web, advertising.   Google needs competition to keep pushing them, so we like it.

Goowy makes fantastic widgets (Under YourMinis), and their flash desktop is gorgeous.

Congrats to Goowy, CEO Alex Bard, and the rest of the team.  They’re definitely the good guys, and we like to see hard work rewarded.

Best Damn Reddit - Submit Your News!

Friday, January 25th, 2008

So, we’ve always asked you to submit news via email.   That’s SO web 1.0.

Forget that noise, we got our hands on a sweet invite only feature on Reddit.com (which some say is way better than Digg..we shall see).

So now, you can submit and vote on news here:

We’ll incorporate it into the show in the coming weeks.   I’m pumped.

Geeks of the MidWeek

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

So what’s up in tech this week?  Here’s your midweek rundown.

Gimme Back my Pic Bitches - So this group of singers ripped off a Billy Joel song and got applauded by 10’s of 10’s of geeks for including them in the video and then this woman got pissed at them for stealing her picture and they were all like “Screw you” and she was all like “Meet my lawyer” and YouTube was all like “I’m taking down your vid” and then the group was all like “sorry” and she was all like “Pay me” and Michael Arrington was all like “Boooooooo!!!”

I’m Popular, Fuckers! - So Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks has 5,000 friends on Facebook, and he’s all like “Oh noz, what do I do?”

I’m WebFamous, who are you? - So formerly reputable Forbes magazine puts out their top 25 web peoplez.  Only problem is, we haven’t heard of half of the folks on it.  Then Scoble was all like “Oh no, so many others belong on that list” and then Rubel was like “Surely others belong on there”, and Perez Hilton was all “Weeeeeeee!”, and Cashmore was like *barf*.  Adam Plante surely belonged on that list.   For what, we have no idea.  But from the looks of that list, that’s all the criteria they were using.

Online office applications are craptastic…still.

Digg says “Gimme dat money!” - Digg’s up for sale, Digg’s not up for sale, Digg’s up for sale, Digg’s not up for sale, Digg’s up for sale, Kevin Rose drinks a lot.  End of fucking story.  Next!

I saw an Android and it said BOOYA! - OMFGZ y’all, I totes saw a phone with Google Androidz!  OMFGWOW.  Yeah, big whoop.  Give us 10 bucks and we’ll show you our asses, both are equally as interesting.   Google’s got a phone operating system, but not, we’ll believe it when we see it and then act accordingly.

I Shall Call it……..Mini-Apple! - So Steve Jobs was sittin around thinking of shit to make and he said “Yo…lets make a smaller Macbook and all of the geeks will get horny over it”.  And they did.   Maybe.

And that’s it, that’s this week so far in tech.   We’re spent.

Twas a bit of mixed day for Apple at the WWDC in Frisco.

Apple released Safari for Windows and announced that Safari will be running on the new iphone.

Google are coming under increasing pressure amid privacy concerns following a report by UK-based human rights agency Privacy International that gave them the big thumbs down coming last behind the likes of Yahoo, Apple and MySpace.

Yahoo investors had a bit of a cry at the recent shareholders meeting, many calling for Terry Semel’s head and questioning recent executive departures. We all know Plante loves his Yahoo!

Disney’s ESPN has purchased the largest cricket website cricinfo.com in an attempt to become more global.

China are allegedly blocking Flickr after photos of the Tiananmen massacre from 1989 were posted according to Yahoo!s Hong Kong office. They cannot confirm these details.

A leaked report found on the NYT has Google accusing Microsoft of making it difficult for 3rd party search engines to replace the default live search on Vista.

Continuing on their out of control collision course, ebay has apparently pulled Google’s advertising after a plan was leaked to crash the ebay user conference in Boston to promote Google Checkout with promises of free booze and women (actually made the woman part up because it sounds good). We wish to see an all out brawl between Meg Whitman and Eric Schmidt.

YouTube apparently ready to start testing a product that theroretically identifies copyright clips and blocks them which should please media companies.

7 sex offenders caught. Aside from liking sex offense, they all have a myspace profile.
